Bio

Sunset portrait of Shalom Ormsby, taken on Maui, Hawaii, by Richard Marks

I’m a photographer and digital artist whose studio is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. My work lies at the intersection of art and spirit.

Early in life, I had the good fortune of being able to travel extensively, beyond the borders of the United States and Europe. This opened my eyes to the vast world outside the bubble of privilege that is easily taken for granted. I spend nearly three years in Asia, traveling, photographing, and being awed from India to Nepal to Korea to Japan to Thailand to Malaysia to Indonesia.

In 2000, I cofounded Plush Studios, a collective of photographers based mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2004, I collaborated with 22 other photographers to cofound Blend Images, a stock agency created “for photographers, by photographers.” Blend offers commercial images – both stills and motion, of all the main license-types – that celebrate the diversity of our colorful, multicultural world. I’m currently serving a fourth year on Blend’s board of directors.

I share a beautiful home (that’s nestled in the rolling hills just north of San Francisco) with my partner, Sonja Drakulich, the lead singer of Stellamara, and our adorable Chihuahua, Bodhi. In addition to Sonja, my loves include nature, healthy living and organic eating, fine art, minimalism, modern design & architecture, all forms of Buddhism (including Zen, Vipassana, and Tibetan), music (especially electronica, hip hop, reggae, and of course, the music of Stellamara), dancing, traveling around our beautiful planet, and all things that ignite the imagination.
